Yep, we stumbled on it too. Chatted with the owner about the Ariel Square 4 motor in the Norton featherbed frame he put together. Even cast a special cylinder head!

They have some seriously cool stuff there for just a little place.

Yep, the current president of the SMC has a 600cc and a scooter commuter. It's not a bad idea, what with ACC levies what they are atm!

Some may be reluctant to own up, but a lot of people with big bikes also have a moped or scooter.

Well, in that case, from that position, no-one should be thinking they can dictate to anyone, what they can ride... Advice, if the person wants it, would be fine of course...

As I said to the group of Harley riders when travelling the USA (during some good natured ribbing) the world would be a boring place if everyone rode the same bike.

But seriously... BMWs are the best... best you buy one

Of course different bikes are good for different purposes ans I agree, motorway/ open road commutes on a 100cc are not ideal. There are situations where they are awesome though and I guess my main point is that they are - and should be seen as - a valid choice. I know several people who have swapped big for little (CBR1000 for a ct110 is the most extreme example) for various reasons, and the negative reaction has been way out of proportion because that is not what people are 'supposed 'to do, ever.

Horses for course I think. As you say, if you're commuting a lot, then a small bike is the way to go (although I can't comment too much, as I use a CB900). Would depend if you have to constantly use the motorway however, if the small bike can't do 100kph and keep up with traffic.

I wouldn't enjoy long distances on a 100cc odd bike however. Mid January to Mid October the BMW has done 26,500km, and I've only had it in my possession for 4 of those 9 months. I think it also depends what you have ridden. I do often say to learners to not spend big dollars on small bikes and wait until you have your full. If you've only ridden small bikes, then perhaps (in my opinion anyway) you don't know what you're missing (besides the increased gas usage and tyres disappearing in a matter of months or less). I've ridden pretty much everything between 50cc and 1800cc, but still prefer something around 1L, being 6'3, 100kg.

Had one in the USA. Harley stopped on the side of the road because his oil cap kept popping out. Supplied some zip ties to hopefully get him to his destination.

Very satisfying having a BMW help a Harley when I am surrounded by them.

When I lived in Fiji my boss once took me and the Wife out for dinner. I ordered the (I can't spell it) Dutch/German sausage thing off the menu.

My boss said "you're in another country, why not order something local?" (which meant Curry, or Fijian, or sort-of Chinese).

I pointed out "I've lived here 2 years and eaten local food all that time, this IS my chance to eat something 'different'".

Food is home, and home is good.

True, the local food is usually awesome. Of course being a vegetarian in Germany with Killer Sprouts abounding kind of made eating out a little difficult! No Döner? What was the world coming to?! It's still worth a visit here for the plastic tomato sauce bottles shaped like tomatoes, I forgot that part. Kitsch FTW!

Nice blog! Interesting to read about Kiwis abroad too. We came across a few, in places like Avignon (in the laundry room of our hotel), and Alkmaar.
Mebbe I'm weird, but on our recent month in France and Italy, I didn't miss Kiwi fare one bit, instead relishing the opportunity to make the most of our vacation and try to always eat local fare, even in places like Schiphol airport, where we eschewed the 'easy' options like Maccas or Burger King in favour of the Dutch takeaways. Mind you, we had somewhat of an ulterior motive, in that during our week in the Netherlands we'd missed any opportunties to partake of frites (with fritessaus of course), fricandelle, and kroketten.
During the entire time away, the only 'normal' food we had was in the hotel at Heathrow (scampi and chips for me, and chicken and leek pie for the vifferbabe). Not only was it expensive, it was also crap, but not as crap as the desserts we waited over an hour for, one of which was inedible.

I wanted one of these when I went to buy my helmet. Unfortunately, it didn't quite fit me right...

From the back the combination of snowy white and crimson red complement the fire-engine fairings of the ax100 nicely...

Made me smile, we went out today to buy my daughter her first helmet, one with the Batman logo was close to being the "one"! unfortunatley (nor maybe not) the best fit was a standard black one.
